BSc., MSc., DClinPsy, PGDip. Neuropsych.

Hello and thank you for visiting my website. I hope the information it contains is effective in helping you understand the services I offer and gives you a sense of the therapeutic approaches I use. If anything is not clear please don't hesitate to get in touch - I hope I can help.

Background

I am a chartered clinical psychologist specialising in attachment-orientated psychotherapy and clinical neuropsychology. I am a dedicated professional and I endeavour to carry out compassionate, transparent and ethical practice in line with the British Psychological Society Code of Ethics and Conduct.

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical psychologists receive training in understanding and applying evidence-based psychological interventions for a range of mental health problems. We specialise in holistic biopsychosocial assessment to understand the interplay between multiple factors in understanding our clients' problems. This multifactorial approach to assessment results in highly individualised formulations which can usefully incorporate aspects of self-identity such as race, religion, sexuality, and sexual identity. Also central to clinical psychology training and clinical activity is measuring the effectiveness of our interventions and reviewing progress. Measures can includes standardised questionnaires, specific goals, and very importantly the subjective experience of our clients.

What is attachment-orientated psychotherapy?
These are psychological approaches which take as a starting point our heritage as social beings with basic needs for secure relational attachments. These approaches prioritise the here-and-now experience of emotions and seek to understand our dominant patterns of relating to others and our characteristic tendencies in managing difficult emotions - defences.

Education
I gained my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Oxford  in 2014 and I have further training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) and Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples and families. I have also recently completed post-doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Glasgow.

Continuing Professional Development

Continuing professional development is a core requirement for chartered clinical psychologists, and I regularly attend clinical supervision and training events. Recently, the use of audiovisual recordings of therapeutic sessions has become accepted as a highly effective way for therapists to review the quality and effectiveness of their interventions. This also benefits the patient*, as the therapist spends more time thinking about the patient, and in the case of  confidential clinical supervision, the patient can benefit from other experienced minds thinking about them. I provide a full information sheet about recording before seeking patients' consent. There is no obligation or expectation to consent to recording.

Ethics, confidentiality and data protection

I am a chartered member of the British Psychological Society http://www.bps.org.uk/bpslegacy/lcm, and adhere to the professional and ethical code of conduct, including the guidelines on confidentiality.  I am also registered with the Health and Care Professions Council http://www.hpc-uk.org/check/. With regards to data protection, I am registered with the Information Commissioners Office ico.org.uk/register.
